Steven Waling on performance poetry

Steven Waling's thoughtful post on performance poetry is well worth reading.

Really enjoyed this take from someone "in the know" as I attended a rather good slam (arriving too late to enter myself!) down here in Purbeck recently, MC'd and chaired by Elvis Mcgonagall.

There were some poorer entries, but the clear leaders of the pack of 12 were pretty classy and ranged from a hi-speed comic narrative recitation, through to a dark-humoured ode from a sleep-deprived dad to his newborn son and a breathtaking, poignant expose of the emotional landscape of a perceived hardened prison inmate.

The audience was obviously served well on this occasion. I admit that hitherto my inexperienced view was that much performance poetry is of the "shout and be shocking or rocking" variety.

Thank you for this insightful post which has broadened my outlook a bit.

    H xx
