A poet laureate whose work I personally admire and find invigorating--hurrah! The New York Times' article is here, though I think you'll have to register with NYT to read it.
I had some mildly disparaging thoughts run through my head on hearing this. He's a bit tart for my liking (not a tart, of course, like P. Muldoon or ancient Ashbery), but if he were a beer he'd be all hops and not much malt. (Orval perhaps). Poems that are lyric short, but not that lyrical.
But I took down 'frightening toys' and realised that he was much better than I remembered, in an origami kind of way.
Hi Carrie! I wrote a longish post about this... I too was refreshed when I looked into his poetry again - and, strangely, found it LESS tart than I'd remembered.
